“WE NEED MUSIC!”
 Psalm 49:13
“Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people, and will have mercy on His afflicted.”

Some of the funniest things…I should say in the most embarrassing things, have occurred when I was conducting either weddings or funerals. It was a cold blustery winter day and I was officiating at a graveside service. The wind was blowing so hard that the sides of the canopy had been lowered. Things were progressing without incident. Most of the family was seated on the front row, except the son-in-law was standing about 5 feet from me on the left.

I was quoting the 23rd Psalm. I think I had just uttered the words; “He maketh me lie down in green pastures.” I heard the intake of breath and as I glanced to the left I noticed that the son-in-law’s trousers had slipped down and were now around his ankles. Rather than being angry the family dissolved in laughter. When I finished the service the son-in-law sheepishly approached me and said, “I think you’ve never seen that happen before?” I agreed with him that it was the very first time that I had ever encountered that.

I was conducting a wedding in a resort setting. There were perhaps 250 to 300 people in attendance. The wedding party had come into pre-recorded music and we were waiting for the bride’s March to be played which would announce the entrance of the bride. There was only silence. Both mothers stood and the audience stood still no music. I looked over at the sound technician who had not been present at the rehearsal. He shrugged his shoulders and acted lost. I asked people to be seated and walked over to him and ask what the problem was? He wanted to know what he was to play and I told him the bride’s March. He did not know what it was! I don’t think the bride was too happy with the sound man!

There humorous situations that we will encounter in our life. If we have no music these situations can become intolerable. I am so glad that Jesus brings music into the heart of those of us who cannot even carry a tune. It’s His music! That’s the music I desire!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

NEAR GOD'S HEART!Hebrews 4:12
"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
Watch Video
When the family gets together they often find our photograph albums. Many of them show me with one of our children or grandchildren lying on my chest sound asleep. In fact, many times both the child and myself are sound asleep. Perhaps I have the type of chest that is made for cuddling into.
I would much rather have the reputation of being a cuddler than a curmudgeon. (That’s a fancy word for an old cantankerous person). I think the warmth of my chest and the steady beat of my heart is comforting to babies.
In the early years of the 20th Century there was an outbreak of diphtheria in the US that claimed many lives. In 1903 Cleland McAfee was chaplain and choir director at Park College in Parkville, Missouri. As the epidemic swept the area, two of his nieces died from the dreaded disease and the others in the house were quarantined. In his hour of grief he wrote the hymn NEAR TO THE HEART OF GOD and had the college choir sing outside the house.
If you are passing through the valley of the shadow of death right now (I know that I am), let these words bring that quiet assurance we need.
Near to the Heart of God
There is a place of quiet rest,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where sin cannot molest,
Near to the heart of God.
Refrain: O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God.
Hold us who wait before Thee,
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where we our Savior meet,
Near to the heart of God.

Refrain: O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God.
Hold us who wait before Thee,
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,
Near to the heart of God
A place where all is joy and peace,
Near to the heart of God.

Refrain: O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God.
Hold us who wait before Thee,
Near to the heart of God.

“READ YOUR OWN INSTRUCTIONS!”
Ephesians 6:2-4
“Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
We have often been told that it is important to read the instructions before assembling. I must confess that most of us men have a tendency to feel that we know more than those who have written the instructions and so we charge full steam ahead without reading the instructions. How frustrating it is when we run into a conflict and realize we have taken the wrong steps or taken them out of order.

I once had purchased two pieces of furniture that required some assembly. For once I read the instructions and begin assembling one of the pieces. I was getting more and more confused and frustrated when I realized I had picked up the wrong instructions and what I was reading was for the opposite peace. Rats!

In today’s Scripture there instructions for children but also for fathers. Children are to obey their parents. That goes back to the 10 Commandments and were told it is the first commandment with promise. The one for fathers is a little more difficult. By the very wording I think it indicates that fathers have a tendency to provoke their children. How sad that is I would like to share just a portion of a letter that I just received of how a grandfather, Tom impacted his three year old grandson, Fischer.

Yesterday, we had Fischer for a few hours while Jamie gave piano lessons.  I had gotten Fischer one of those little beginner fishing poles awhile ago and I thought this might be the time for him to try it out.  I asked Tom to walk with Fischer and I to a little stream not far from our house so Fischer could practice with his fishing pole.  He had so much fun playing with the pole and throwing rocks and sticks into the stream.  He did not want to leave.  On the walk back, I told Tom “to Fischer, this experience was better than going to Disneyland.”  Fischer said “Yep.”

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“GET US OUT OF HERE!”
 Hebrews 2:3-4
“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?”

1959 Yellowstone earthquake occurred on August 17 at 11:37 pm (MST) in southwestern Montana, United States. The earthquake measured 7.3 to 7.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, and caused a huge landslide that caused over 28 fatalities. I had just started my shift as dispatcher on the Nampa, Idaho police department. As our building began to shake I could hear cries coming from the jail section; “Get us out of here!”

There was a brief moment of panic as I considered the consequences. If I opened the cells and released the prisoners, they might escape and I would be held accountable. On the other hand if I ignored their cries and the building began to crumble, I might escape, but they would have no way of escape.

Almost as soon as I considered the options I grabbed the jail key and while ignoring the calls coming in on the switchboard, ran back and opened each cell begging them to please gather outside on the lawn until the threat had ended. I then went back to my post and prayed that we may all survive the quake. There was no loss of life in our area, and yes, all of the prisoners thanked me as I led them back to their cells.

I think we can almost feel the earth shaking with the certainty of Christ’s soon return. I can almost hear their cry; “Get us out of here!” It should cause each of us to take more responsibility to rescue as many as possible. Let’s risk our own comfort and save them!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“A SERVANT SPIRIT!”
 John 13:3-5
“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.”
I think most of us have heard of Dwight L. Moody. the world famous evangelist. It seems he never thought more of himself that he should, but was always one who had a servant spirit. In the late 1800’s he invited a number of ministers to attend the Northfield Evangelistic Conference in Massachusetts.

These pastors stayed in a dormitory during the conference. The first night as Moody looked down the hallway he noticed that most of the pastors had placed their shoes outside their doors. Evidently they expected there would be servants who would shine their shoes for them before morning. Not wishing to embarrass them DL Moody took their shoes to his room and laboriously polishing each pair before placing them outside their owners door.

Every time I think of this prominent worldwide renowned minister of the gospel stooping to polish shoes I am impressed. He did not want to embarrass his visitors. I think of a true servant of the Most High God becomes a servant to others.

I’m not sure how many of us will find shoes outside of someone’s door but I know one thing…there will be people who need to be served. We are given a choice... we either act with pride or with purpose. I purpose to be a God’s servant.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“REMEMBERING!”
 II Timothy 1:3-5
“I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day,  greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.”

I have often said that I am better at forgetting that I am remembering. I think this is more true the older I get. But it is so important to remember the things that will last for eternity. It is also important to remember the things that make us what we are today, as well as the people who have contributed to making our lives what they are today.

We celebrate Memorial Day as a time of remembering those who have gone before us and have given so much to us, especially those who have given their lives in the service of their/our country. As a former military enlisted man and commissioned officer, I have stood ready to give my life for my country.

Recalling those times when my life was ready to be given, I knew that it was worth it in order to protect and defend that for which I committed myself. When I took the oath to support and defend my country, I swore that my country was more important than my individual life. I would die rather than live as a coward.

On this Memorial Day it is important that we remember those who have gone before us. It is also vital that we realize that those who come after us will remember us. We are creating memories by the lives we live and the faith we demonstrate. I pray that our children and their children and their children’s children will know that we were faithful to our God and our nation. Take time to reflect on this day and that our God gave us something to remember for as long as we live.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

OPEN MY EYES!2 Kings 6:17
"And Elisha prayed, and said, 'LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.' Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha."
Watch Video
One of my greatest thrills in my ministry is ministering to those who have lost their sight. I hesitate to call them blind because many times they see much better than I can---they see in a different way. You might say they see with their other senses better than we can see with our ocular facilities.
Yesterday I wrote about voice recognition. I’m thinking of a couple, Burl and Denise. Both have lost 100% of their sight. The last time I saw them was at a wedding reception. People were talking all around us and yet when I said hello to them immediately they responded, "Hello Cecil, how are you?" They recognize me because they saw me with their ears.
This passage is one of my favorites. Elisha, by the power of the Holy Spirit, had been supplying the king of Israel up-to-date reports on any traps that the king of Aram had been setting for him. When the king of Aram discovered that it was Elisha who had been warning the king of Israel, he sent troops by night to arrest Elisha and bring him back to him.
In the morning the servant of Elisha saw the armed force of Aram surrounding them. In utter terror he reported to Elisha that they were surrounded and there was no hope of escape for them. It was then that Elisha prayed this prayer to allow his servant what he already was able to see. Oh, how I wish we could see the army of the Lord that He has placed around us.
Clara Fiske Scott lived from 1841 to 1897 when she died after being thrown from a buggy pulled by a runaway horse. She was a prolific hymn writer, but only this week's featured hymn is still in circulation. Think of her hymn as a prayer such as Elisha had prayed so long ago.
Open My Eyes
Open my eyes, that I may see,
glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key,
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Refrain: Silently now I wait for Thee,
ready my God, Thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine.

Open my ears, that I may hear,
voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
everything false will disappear.
Refrain: Silently now I wait for Thee,
ready my God, Thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine.

Open my mouth, and let me bear,
gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare,
love with Thy children thus to share.
Refrain: Silently now I wait for Thee,
ready my God, Thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine.

“HIS VOICE!”
 John 10:1-3
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”

Voice recognition is a strange thing. Something in the tone of a voice identifies who it is that is speaking or calling. When I was a boy we would be outside playing, and in the evening our mother would call us to come home for dinner. Without any identification other than the sound of her voice, each of us would know whether it was our mother or the mother of one of our friends. Just the sound of the voice made the difference.

When I was in college we lived in a housing project with other married college students. It was not too long after World War II and the housing was former military barracks. Not the most glamorous place to live, but the camaraderie that existed between all of the married families was wonderful.

One evening several of us men were visiting outside, discussing college and some of the difficult professors we had (yes there were some of them), when the wife of one of the men opened her door and yelled at the top of her voice, “Chester! Come in right now! It is getting dark!” We would have recognized her voice a block away. Poor Chester! We felt for him!

I am told that the sheep can identify the voice or the sound of their shepherd. It may be a whistle or a guttural sound. It may be a hand signal or body language. No matter what means of communication, the sheep know when the Shepherd is calling. How do we know when the Lord is speaking to us?  The more time we spend in His Word and in prayer, the more familiar we become with the way He speaks.  Listen for His voice and obey!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

“ALWAYS SOMETHING!”
 John 16:32-33
“Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.  These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

“Be of good cheer!” How easy it is to pronounce statements like that without considering the cost. According to Jesus, we are going to have tribulations. Have you experienced them yet? Some wise person once observed that if you haven’t already, you will.  They are not just mere words¯they are reality. This world is not an easy place in which to live. But, we are called to live here and to be an example.

I really haven’t had to suffer too much in my lifetime. I’ve lost many family members that were very close and very dear. I have gone through financial reversals. I have known physical restrictions and conflicts. But I can’t truly say that I have really suffered the way many have suffered and are suffering.

John the beloved disciple wrote the book in which we read today’s Scripture. We are told that he was the only one of the disciples that was not martyred. But believe me, he did not escape suffering. We are informed that he was dipped into boiling oil and yet survived. I hate to even consider the thought of what that must have felt like. Since he was tortured and expected to die, I doubt that there was any thought of making it easier for him by giving him any form of anesthesia.

So what do we do when we have troubles in this world? According to the words of Jesus in today’s Scripture, we are to be of good cheer. What reason does Jesus give? The reason is that He has overcome the world and we can overcome the world through Him. Are you living that victorious life in the face of difficult situations right now?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

PRLog - May 18, 2015 - TUMWATER, Wash. -- NEW BOOK JUST RELEASED! Life Is So Daily!: A 365 Day Walk With The Word, by Pastor Cecil A. Thompson, Compiled by Larry E. Hunter

A BRIEF HISTORY: In the 1970’s I was on the ministerial staff of a large church. At one of our weekly staff meetings, the Senior Pastor announced that he wanted to start daily devotionals. Each staff member was to write seven devotionals which would be printed and distributed to the congregation each Sunday.  Unfortunately, the project only lasted a short while because staff members complained that it was impossible to produce material for seven days.

THE DAILY E-VOTIONAL BEGINS: Thirty years later, September 15, 2000, I was pastoring a small congregation and requested the members email addresses. The number of responses surprised me so I sent them a short devotional message.

Once again the response surprised me. They wanted me to send more! As I prayed about the commitment it would require on my part, the Lord prompted me to use this method to share His Word through my life experiences. The Daily E Votional was born.

At the outset I sent out a new message seven days a week. Some of my spiritual counselors advised me to reduce it to five days a week or I would not have the energy to sustain it. I listened and limited the E Votionals to five days a week.

The other change I made was to shorten the messages. Can I let you in on a little secret? It is much easier to write much than to write little. I eventually tried to cut back to a single page and encapsulate the message within four paragraphs. I also discovered that people like stories, which reminded me that Jesus used stories as the basis for much of His teaching. He painted word pictures that allowed the people to visualize His message.

I have had a very unique work history all the way from driving a milk delivery truck, to jet aircraft mechanic, to police officer, to juvenile probation officer, to Air Force Personnel Officer, to Missile Launch Officer, to Nuclear Safety Officer, to Criminal Justice Planner and, through almost all of it, a preacher and teacher of God’s Word.

ABOUT PASTOR CECIL: From time to time I receive requests asking about me and who I am. To be honest, I occasionally ask myself the same questions. With that in mind, I would like to give you a brief glimpse of who this guy is who calls himself “Pastor Cecil.”

CURRENT STATUS:
Pastor, Tumwater Chapel of Grace Ministries
5116 Bald Eagle Lane S.W.
Tumwater, Washington 98512
PastorCecil@Daily-E-Votional.com

MINISTRY EXPERIENCE:
Preaching assignments in South Dakota, Newfoundland, Missouri;Assoc. Pastor (Discipleship/Counseling) - Nampa, Idaho,1st Nazarene Pastor - Burns, Oregon Church of the Nazarene; Pastor - Shelton, Washington Church of the Nazarene; Pastor - Olympia, Washington – Summit Lake Community Church; Pastor - Chapel of Grace Ministries.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND AND TESTIMONY: I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior during a Vacation Bible School in Camas, Washington, when I was in the third or fourth grade. It was a genuine experience and I have never turned back from following Him all of my life. In 1948 I fell in love with my sweetheart Joyce when we were both 14. Throughout our 62 plus years of marriage we remained totally devoted to each other.

Joyce and I were blessed with three beautiful children and eight gorgeous grandchildren. Blessing is the operative word in our life because we early on learned the secret of blessing.

In 1991, one year after becoming pastor at Summit Lake Community Church, our oldest daughter ascended to be with our Lord. We learned the blessing of trusting the Lord even when allowing our precious girl to slip the bonds of this world. Her three children, surrounded with our prayers, became such a joy to us. We are even more blessed to have our son Dan, his wife Donna and their family living close to us.

Our youngest daughter, Lori, experienced kidney failure in 2001. She started kidney dialysis and went on the transplant list for both her kidney and pancreas. On December 18, 2001, our granddaughter Jenna (Brenda’s daughter), donated one of her kidneys to her aunt Lori. The transplant was a great success.

On February 5, 2002, a pancreas became available and was transplanted at the University Of Washington Medical Center where the kidney transplant had been completed the previous year. Several months later the pancreas failed and Lori received a second transplant. She has experienced several challenges since the transplants, but we walk by faith, as does she, and simply allow the Lord to work out the details.

Together Joyce and I experienced many blessings of the Lord on our ministry. Even though my dear wife has now ascended to be with our Lord, we always believed that there is no such thing as retirement. I want to be found faithful when the Lord calls me to be with Him and reunited with my dear ones who have gone on before me.

This is a tiny glimpse of Pastor Cecil. My one desire is to be used in any and every way the Lord chooses. Walk with God today, trust Him completely, and be a blessing. Pastor Cecil. Pastor Cecil's “The Sands Of Eternity” Video Message At: http://www.pastorcecil.com/

“SHINE BRIGHT!”
 Matthew 5:16
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

My wife, Joyce had a tradition that on the birthday of one of our family or loved ones who had passed on to be with the Lord she would light a candle and burn it all day in memory of that precious one. Last Sunday, May 10, was Mother’s Day but it was also Joyce’s birthday. Early in the day I turned on a LED candle…one of those tiny candles that I had purchased at the Dollar tree. My experiences with these candles are that they usually last only a couple of days. After seven days that tiny candle still flickers…faintly but it’s flickering.

It is made me think about our testimony…The things that make us all we really are. Do people see our light burning brightly? Do they see the light of Jesus in all that we do and all that we say? Actions burn brighter than mere words.

I want my light to shine for Christ, especially in this sin darkened world, so that people will be able to see that there is hope. I want them to see that in the midst of all the rotten things around us there can be light.

Someone has written; The darker the night the brighter our light shines. Unfortunately we spend much of our time complaining about the darkness instead of getting so close to Jesus that we begin to glow. That makes me wonder again about how bright my light shines. I want it to shine for Jesus.
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART

“HONEST MISTAKES!”
 Ecclesiastes 5:6-7
“Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?  For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.”

Let’s face it. Most of the mistakes we make occur out of our own free will. We are sinful people, and God’s Word is very clear about letting us know that. However, things will happen from time to time that are really not intended.

Let me give you an example of how an honest mistake can become an embarrassing gaffe. My dear sweet wife Joyce, who has now gone to be with the Lord, had a shy personality. She was always concerned about how her demeanor and communication would affect other people. I often stood in amazement of her kind spirit and her delicate nature, and I will miss those beloved attributes for the rest of my days.

One day in the shopping mall we spotted a young man from our Sunday school class. Unfortunately, Joyce got his name mixed up with one of the other members of our class. The following week she bumped into the wrong young man’s fiancĂ© and commented, “I saw your husband in the mall the other day and he is such a fine young man.” The young lady reacted very sharply. “That’s strange. He was supposed to be out of town on a business trip.” Oops! Luckily I was there and could provide the correct identity of the man we had actually seen at the mall. Joyce was terribly embarrassed by this honest mistake.

God knows our intentions; He knows when we make an honest mistake and when we intentionally violate His Word. Our life should be a living example of what a true person of God should be. Mistakes, yes! But not intentional sinning.
May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
